Terry Pratchett 2010 Challenge

If you have been reading my blog for any length of time, you will probably be aware that I am something of a sucker for reading challenges. One thing I have never done though is hosted a challenge but all that is about to change!

I mentioned in my blogiversary post that I was going to be hosting my first ever challenge, so now it is time to reveal the details!

I have been reading Terry Pratchett for years. I have distinct memories of being on a bus in Adelaide more than 15 years ago and having other passengers looking at me very strangely because I was laughing at loud at something I had read in a Pratchett novel. I read a number of his books and then stopped, I think mainly because I went off travelling and stopped reading full stop. I always intended to come back to them.

Over the last few years I have read a couple of Discworld novels, but not as many as I would have liked. As far back as March 2007 I blogged about the possibility of reading the Discworld series in its entirety, but it never happened. You know that means just one thing! Time for a Terry Pratchett reading challenge!

The challenge will start from 1 December 2009 and run through to 30 November 2010. There are several different levels of participation for you to choose from:

1-3 books - Cashier at Ankh-Morpork Mint
4-5 books - Guard of the City Watch
6-8 books - Academic at the Unseen University
9-10 books - Member of Granny Weatherwax's Coven
10-12 books - Death's Apprentice

You can either be reading the books for the first time, rereading, or even watching the TV adaptations if you like! As long as everyone has fun I will be happy! Please also do not feel limited to only reading the Discworld books as any books by Terry Pratchett will count for this challenge.

For a full list of the Discworld books in publication order, check out this page on the author's website for his page at Fantastic Fiction. The number of books either written by Terry Pratchett or about his work is a bit mind boggling really.

Each month, I will put a Mr Linky up so that you can link your reviews or Pratchett posts if you want to do more general posts say on individual characters, places, events etc.

To sign up just leave a comment on this post with a link to your intro post if you do one. I look forward to seeing what people post about over the next 12 months.

Special thanks to McVane for the fantastic button

  1. I'm a bit of a reading challenge junkie myself and have promised that I will be more controlled next year, but I just can't resist this one. Have you read TP's "Nation"? Awesome stuff.

I will come back and post a link once I write my sign-up post. I'm aiming for Death's Apprentice. I haven't read the latest Discworld novel yet, so that will be first on my list.

  2. yay! Could the button be any more awesome? :D

I'll be back at some point between now and the end of the year to sign up properly :P Meanwhile, here's a link participants might find useful: Discworld reading order guide.

  3. Ah, Terry Pratchett. I love him!! If anyone wants to try a non-Discworld book, I recommend The Carpet People. I thought it was very clever!

  4. I have yet to read Terry Pratchett. Any recommendations as to which one I should start with, or are they all in series (in which case I would start with #1 of course)

  5. I've been meaning to read Pratchett. Count me in!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Count me in. I've kinda/sorta been meaning to read Pratchett.

  7. I totally want to sign up for this, but I have a feeling that if I do, I won't read any Pratchett in the next year. I tend to rebel against myself like that. Hmmm... I wonder if I can psyche myself into believing I am NOT taking part, while actually doing so, so that I will want to read more Pratchett?

  9. I've been iffy about trying out Discworld, but my friends keep insisting it is AMAZING. I'm enjoying Good Omens as I'm reading right now, so I'm going to take this on as further motivation! =D

  12. I was planning on reading four Pratchett books next year anyway, so I'm totally in. Here's my post http://sausconys-books.livejournal.com/71451.html

  13. I'm hoping to get around to starting the Discworld series anyway, and I still have to read Good Omens. So I'm in for this one. Thanks for the new challenge!

  14. This sounds like a really fun challenge, and since I just bought the first two books in the discworld series, it's right up my alley! I am going to see if I can arrange my reading schedule around this one. Thanks for dreaming this one up!

  15. I signed up-I'm super excited because while I own three Discworld novels, I've never gotten around to reading them. But now I think I will!

  17. I love Terry Pratchett and I love reading challenges. What can I say, I'm addicted to both! I've read most of Pratchett's books except for his latest two books and childrens books but always reread his Discworld books when I need a bit of comforting. Great challenge!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Wow thanks for hosting such a cool challenge. Pratchett is comfort reading for me also, I love the YA Discworld novels and any featuring Death. I read and reviewed the latest novel; Unseen Academicals recently. Anyway I am signing up and here is the link to my post:

  23. I heard about this on the Strange and Random Happenstance blog & I'm thinking I'm in. I'm in the middle of my first Pratchett book and am always embarrassing myself in public with it (too many sudden burst of laughter). I've already purchased 3 of the Discworld books, so as long as I get to them in a timely fashion (I only have several hundred to-read books in residence - reading challenges gone arwy), I'm golden!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm in!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I am so joining this challenge! I have been a fan of PTerry's work for over ten years, and regularly reread everything I own. As there are some gaps in my collection, this will be the perfect occasion for me to a) fill the gaps and b) read the missing books in between the one I already have.
I will also try to get my father, brother and husband "in". The first two won't be a problem, as they are massive readers too, but the last one has yet to read his first Pratchett. He'll probably start with the screen versions, but no biggie, I'll get him reading!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I've already read all the Discworld novels, including the Tiffany Aching ones--love those Nac Mac Feegles. Plus I re-read one at random when nothing else sounds good. Discworld, as they say, is my happy place.

  27. OK, I'm in:

  30. What the hell indeed bartango007. Welcome to the challenge!

Dawn, I remember discovering Pratchett a number of years and really enjoying his books. I hope you do too.

Clover, I am glad that you are in. Enjoy!

Seamstressguild, I haven't read any of the Tiffany Aching ones. Hopefully I will get to them before the end of the challenge. Thanks for stopping by to comment.

Liessa, the more the merrier, so it's great that you are going to convince some of your family members to join in too!

Granny Weatherwax Apprentice, with a user name like that I am tipping that you are already a fan! Hope you enjoy the challenge.

Welcome to the challenge, The Fat Lady.

Whichwaydidshego, I have so many books here to read myself, and always a huge library checkout list as well! Welcome to the challenge.

Sarah, it is a great button isn't it! Can't take the credit for it myself, but I am very pleased with the way it turned out.

Thanks so much for joining in on my challenge Cath.

Michael, glad to be able to provide you with an achievable challenge! Hope you enjoy it!

Jacqui and Staci, welcome on board!

Sausconys-books, hope you meet your goal. Welcome to the challenge.

Leya, I really hope you enjoy your first Pratchett books!

Caty, resistance is futile. Welcome aboard.

Ninefly, I am hoping that Good Omens will be one of the books that I get to read this year!

Come on Aarti, you know you want to!

KatieMack, I hope you kinda/sorta get to read some Pratchett this year!

Vasilly, I swear we all have authors we have been meaning to read! Welcome to the challenge!

Louise, I started at the beginning but I have seen a lot of people recommend that you not start there. I have heard Guards, Guards is a good place to start.

Lezlie, I haven't even thought too much about reading the non-Discworld books, there are just so many of those ones to read first!

Thanks for the reading order link Nymeth. Look forward to seeing your official sign in post!

Susan, I find it difficult to resist a good challenge too! Looking forward to seeing your sign up post too.

  61. My first reading challenge and it has to be Sir Pterry! I am pumped. I've blogged about it and have also taken the opportunity to advertise the third Australian Discworld Convention on...

    my blog

I hope you don't mind. I've also mentioned it in the forums on the Nullus Anxietas website.

A good book to start off with could be Hogfather and that's partly as you can buy it on DVD which is fairly close to the original book and has a cameo of the author himself.

  88. Just read my 16th Pratchett book for the challenge: I Shall Wear Midnight.

I'm hoping to read Sourcery and The Amazing Maurice before the end of the challenge, which will mean I've read the whole Discworld series over the last two-and-a-bit years.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I've finished 5 so far and have 2 more queued up. With 2 months to go, I think the total will be more than 7. This is great fun!

    ReplyDelete
  90. I read six Terry Pratchett books this year: The Colour Of Magic, The Light Fantastic, Mort, Sourcery, Equal Rites and Eric.

    Currently, I'm reading Wyrd Sisters.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I've read all 37, and then some. Do I Win? :)
