2008 Challenge Page

Happy New Year!

With just over 5 hours of 2008 left for us, we are getting ready to head into the city with friends, to observe the fireworks, listen to some music and generally celebrate the end of this year, and the start of the new year! We actually have never done this since we have lived in Melbourne so hopefully it will be fun!

I wish all my blogging friends a very Happy New Year, and hope that however you are celebrating you have a great new year, and that you party safely!

Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesday is hosted by Should be Reading:

  • Grab your current read.
  • Let the book fall open to a random page.
  • Share with us two (2) “teaser” sentences from that page, somewhere between lines 7 and 12.
  • You also need to share the title of the book that you’re getting your “teaser” from … that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given!
  • Please avoid spoilers!

This week my teaser comes from page 206 of Bleeding Dusk by Colleen Gleason.

She would have followed him, but Ilias caught her arm. "You cannot come back in this way, so take care. It is only an exit."

I have no idea who Ilias is, let alone who 'him' is! Have to keep reading.

Reading Challenges update Part 1

Given how close it is to the end of the year (gasp!) it is time for one last look at the outstanding challenges that I have for this year. Over the next couple of days I will do a best of 2008 type post with some stats and then some details of the challenges that I will be taking part in during 2009.

Pub 08 Reading Challenge

Whilst I didn't get around to reading the first three books off of my original list (but I will!) and I read but didn't review the last two books, I have read 47 books this year that were published in 2008, so I definitely finished the reading part of the challenge. Some highlights (with reviews) were The Host by Stephenie Meyer, The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society by Maryann Shaffer, The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson, The Time of Singing by Elizabeth Chadwick and East of the Sun by Julia Gregson. I am swapping these titles in, so this is challenge complete!

I've signed up for the Pub 09 Reading Challenge already!

Romance Reading Challenge

This challenge finished earlier this month. I still didn't manage to read either The Huntress or Lover Unbound, so I didn't quite make it to completion on this challenge.

Naida is running this challenge again this year. I am not signing up this year, but not for any other reason than I need to have some kind of limits on the number of challenges that I participate in!

Chunkster Challenge

I finally read Wolf of the Plains by Conn Iggulden, but I haven't done the reviw yet. So I kind of finished this one.

Does anyone know if someone is running this again next year? I have tried to contact this year's host but haven't had a response yet. Are people interested in participating in this challenge? I definitely still am, and I might be willing to host it as long as no one else wants to.

Heard it Through the Grapevine Challenge

I never did get around to reading Counting the Stars. I do have it out from the library again at the moment so maybe I will get to read it early in the new year. This challenge ended on November 30.

Stephenie Meyer Mini Challenge

I have read both The Host and Breaking Dawn, but haven't reviewed Breaking Dawn. I also went to see Twilight tonight. With the challenge finishing on January 30, I should still be able to complete this one.

The Sci-Fi Experience 2009

Okay, so I am shallow and have joined a challenge/experience because of the awesomeness of the button! Actually, I may have done that before too, and I did participate in last year's version of the challenge as well, so perhaps, just perhaps, I am not totally shallow. Maybe?

Anyway, Carl V is once again hosting the Sci-fi Experience. In his words:

As I said last year, this is an experience and not a challenge. There are no reading lists, book requirements, etc. I do not argue about what is or is not considered ’science fiction’. Nothing about this two month period of science fiction celebration should cause anyone to feel obligated to participate. I host two other very involved challenges throughout the year and the last thing I want to do is start a new year adding stress to your busy lives or my own. This is simply a time to experience how exhilarating science fiction can be.

Again from last year:

“More than any other genre of fiction, science fiction reading is to me an experience– not only does it transport me to another time and place in the future but it also transports me to my past and as such creates an aura of reading that is wonderful to experience but difficult to describe. I can only hope that you fellow readers are nodding your heads in agreement right now, recalling similar experiences that you have with various novels and/or genres of fiction.”

The main reason for me to participate in the Experience is that sci-fi is one of the genres that I don't read very often, and so I like to try and expand my exposure to the genre as a whole. I really enjoyed the book I read last year, and then The Host by Stephenie Meyer is one of my favourite reads of 2008, so it does seem like a good idea to read another sci-fi book. The question is what? I could read the second book in the Island in the Sea of Time trilogy but I guess that would be cheating a little. I have borrowed it from the library a couple of times over the last twelve months but had to return it unread.

I think though I am going to give myself two books to read. Both are cross genre reads. The first is a sci-fi/romance that I bought months ago and haven't read yet - Wanderlust by Ann Aguirre. The other is a YA/sci-fi book that I first read about at Becky's Book Reviews, and have seen around other places in blogland - Life as We Know It by Susan Pfeffer.

****Edited to say****

I will of course be reading Grimspace, the first book in Ann Aguirre's ongoing series, not the second book!

The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett

From one of England's most celebrated writers, the author of the award-winning The History Boys, a funny and superbly observed novella about the Queen of England and the subversive power of reading

When her corgis stray into a mobile library parked near Buckingham Palace, the Queen feels duty-bound to borrow a book. Discovering the joy of reading widely (from J. R. Ackerley, Jean Genet, and Ivy Compton-Burnett to the classics) and intelligently, she finds that her view of the world changes dramatically. Abetted in her newfound obsession by Norman, a young man from the royal kitchens, the Queen comes to question the prescribed order of the world and loses patience with the routines of her role as monarch. Her new passion for reading initially alarms the palace staff and soon leads to surprising and very funny consequences for the country at large.
In this 120 page long novella, Alan Bennett hypothesises about what might happen should the Queen suddenly become an avid reader. What would happen if she wanted to talk to the influential people that she meets about famous authors, and if suddenly all those affairs of state got in the way of that really good book that she is reading!

Whilst many of the events in the novel are pretty unrealistic, the book itself is very readable, and will have a ready made audience in terms of bookworms everywhere, who will appreciate Her Majesty's frustration when the book she is reading goes missing, and when she would rather just stay at home reading than go on a Royal excursion.

This was an entertaining and fun read - just perfect to read when you are not feeling a hundred percent and would struggle to concentrate on anything too long or too hard. I can tell that I am really ill when I can't read, and I picked up several books before this one caught my eye. I managed to read it in a couple of sittings. If I had of been feeling better I could probably have read it quicker, but as it was it met my requirements quite well.

Top 10 Crime novels

Kerrie from Mysteries in Paradise is wanting to create a blogger's list of the Top 10 Crime novels read in 2008. You can see the details here.

My list would look something like this:

The Ape Who Guards the Balance by Elizabeth Peters
Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn
Seduction in Death by J D Robb
The Falcon at the Portal by Elizabeth Peters
Exit Strategy by Kelley Armstrong
Diamond Dove by Adrian Nyland
Purity in Death by J D Robb
When Will There Be Good News by Kate Atkinson
The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson.

I am not sure that all of these qualify as crime, but they meet my definition at least! Be sure to visiit Kerrie and give her your list of best crime novels for the year!

Christmas wrap up!

I am slowly recovering from the cold that I managed to get for Christmas. My goodness I felt terrible for the last couple of days. I sound as though I am coughing up a lung still but I do feel a bit better! Might still have to have a nap or two today!

Santa was good to me. No books, but that is because at least some of my family members believe I read a bit much! He bought me a new bag (which I really needed), a new cast iron frying pan (which I really needed), some earrings, a vase, some vouchers, Abba Singstar, a Top Gear DVD, Pink's Funhouse.

For the boy there was an iPod Shuffle (so I have been spending a while trying to figure out how to work the darn thing!), a new bike, a book, a Futurama DVD, Kung Fu Panda DVD, some Adelaide Crows merchandise, a Battleship game, some Transformers, a Bakugan amongst other things.

I decided that seeing as I was doing so well with the vegies, I would try a couple of other plants, so now I have not the one or two I was thinking of, but six pots full of fuschias. My mother thinks that I can go from killing everything I grow to growing cuttings in one easy step. I am not sure that I agree with her, but we'll see I guess!

Speaking of growing things, we ate our first piece of home grown produce yesterday. Here it is, before it was gobbled up!

Merry Christmas!

Santa has been, and I think that the boy is happy with his gifts! He would want to be I tell you!

It is a beautiful 24C here today (75F). We are off to sit outside and enjoy our dinner. I don't know for sure what we are having but I am sure that there will be lots of it, including prawns, roast and pudding! I am just glad that I am not the one who needs to prepare it all!

Whatever you and yours are doing, I hope that you have a safe and merry Christmas, or, if you don't celebrate Christmas that you are enjoying your holiday season as well!

Day 24 - Blog Advent Tour

And so we come to the end of this year's Blog Advent Tour and I have to say I think it has been terrific this year! I already am looking forward to next year!

I was hoping to do a recap of some of the posts tonight, but I have managed to get myself a summer cold and I feel terrible so I am off to bed for an early night!

Before I do go to bed though I do want to say thanks to everyone who participated this year, and to announce the final stops on the tour which are with Carl from Stainless Steel Droppings
, Kailana's Written World and Sherry at Semicolon.

One last treat from me. Did you know that you can track Santa as he goes around the world via NORAD - click here and watch Santa as he criss crosses the globe delivering gifts! My son loves watching this, and it is something that we enjoy doing together!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Just like last week, I have a teaser from It by Stephen King - yes, I am still reading it!

Grimacing (his belly was stiffening now; it had gone board-hard, and the blood seeping sluggishly between his fingers had the consistency of sap just before you took the taps out of the maples in late March or early April), he got on his knees and pushed aside the still hedge-branches. He could see headlights and the shop of a car. Cops?

The reason I am reading It because I was challenged to do so by Ana and Thea from Book Smugglers. I was supposed to have finished it by the 21st, but I didn't quite make it. You can see my guest post where I talk about my experience ... so far... reading this book by clicking here!

Day 23 - 2008 Advent Blog Tour

Well, apart from a few bits and pieces, I think I am done! Tonight I am hoping to wrap the last of the gifts, but I also need to clear the spare room in case my mother does end up staying with me for the next two nights!

We are nearly done for the Advent Blog Tour as well, although there are a few stops yet, including the following blogs today:

Jane from Janezlifeandtimes

Memory from Stella Matutina

Debbie from Friday Friends Book Blog

Cari from Book Scoops

I thought I might put up a couple of classic 80's Christmas songs for our enjoyment!

Australian LitBlog Snapshot

Matilda, one of my favourite Aussie blogs to read, has been hosting an ongoing series called the Australian LitBlog Snapshot where he asks the same series of questions to a group of Aussie bloggers! Some of the blogs are new to me, others I already read regularly, and there is great variety amongst the list!

Today, I am lucky enough to be the featured blog! You can read everyone's answers by clicking here.

Thanks for the opportunity, and welcome to any new visitors!

Monsters Are Afraid of the Moon by Marjane Satrapi

Even though my favourite book of last year was a picture book, I don't often read them. My reason for reading this one was simple. I loved the two Persepolis books by Marjane Satrapi and I was hoping to read some of her other books as well, but the only one my library had was this one!

This is very much a book aimed at say a 6 or 7 years old. There are quite a lot of words in it for a picture book. The drawings are boldly coloured, and simple - very easy on the eyes. The message is a good one too. Marie is scared of the monsters that come out at night, but the monsters are scared at the light, so Marie decides to cut the moon from the sky, but there are consequences of her actions, for everyone, but especially for the cats and rats, so there needs to be another solution.

A fun read. My 10 year old read it in the car to me as I drove along, so it didn't take very long at all to read.

I don't read enough picture books to give a true rating, but I liked this one!

Day 21 - 2008 Blog Advent Tours

Today on the Advent Tour there are four stops:

Rhinoa from Rhinoa's Ramblings

Melissa from Remember to Breathe

The Bluestocking Guide

Michelle from Fluttering Butterflies

Yesterday I posted about my new ornaments. Today, it is two of my favourites from a couple of years ago. I just love these two, and normally I insist that I need to be the one to put them on the tree! This year my son put one on, and I thought I had lost one of them!

Day 20 - Blog Advent Tour

Day 20 on the tour and today we are visiting Jessica from The Bluestockings Society, Naida from The Bookworm, BookClover and Book Thingo.

Each year I try to buy at least one new Christmas decoration for the tree. Some years it is a ball with the year painted on it. Other years it has been something else. This year, I have not one new decoration but six! The main reason for having six is that when I went to the shops last weekend, one of the department stores already had 40% off of their decorations, so I bought four! The other two came from a couple of family members who went to Sydney earlier in the month and bought decorations back.

The ones that I bought were three wise men and a purple and gold year bauble.

This is one of the gifts. At first glance I thought it was a kangaroo but a closer look tells me it is actually a reindeer. We won't mention my inability to recognise the national emblem okay? The tail should have been a clue!

This one is one that I was given last night. I really need a new bag, although I don't think that this one will fit many books in it, which is the top criteria I have for buying new handbags!

Day 19 - 2008 Blog Advent Tour

Today on the Blog Advent Tour we are visiting the blogs of Laclau from Conversacions de Cafe, Krissi from The Swim Mom, Morgan from Insert Clever Name Here and Mariel from Where Troubles Melt Like Lemon Drops. Laclau's post is in Spanish, but there is a translation tool at the bottom of the blog! I just love that the English translation keeps referring to her panthers, which I suspect might be cats! LOL!

Here's some snippets of Aussie Christmas songs! It should be said that we don't sing any of them regularly, but they are an attempt to catch a little bit of the summer Christmas spirit!

The songs in order are:

1.Aussie Jingle bells
2.Deck the Sheds with bits of wattle
3.Santa's movin' to the South Pole
4.Barry the elf
5.The Holly and the Ivy
6.He's the Aussie Santa
7.Cool Rockin' Santa
8.Here Comes Christmas Bob
9.We wish you a ripper Christmas
10.Boomba the snow man

Finally made those changes I was talking about!

I first talked about making some changes to my blog in October. My plan was to copy all the posts that I had at my card making blog that I updated infrequently over to this blog, instead of maintaining them both! I was still thinking about it today when I noticed a new feature in Blogger that allowed the Import and Export of Blogger posts. I have to say I was totally impressed at how easy it was to both export the posts off of Card Making Adventures and into this blog! The posts will be on both blogs for a short time while I relabel and then I will delete Card Making Adventures totally. It seems to me that this new option will make it a bit easier to back up your blog on a regular basis as well!

Another small change is that I have changed the comment form so that it is embedded below the post instead of in a separate window. I can not tell you how often I have to click back to see what the main post was about because I have made half a comment and then forgotten what I was going to say!

Day 18 - Blog Advent Tour

A week to go before the big day! Are we all ready? I think I am getting there in terms of things that need to happen on the big day. We just won't think about Christmas cards! Other than that, all under control I think!

Today on the tour we are visiting Alex from Daemonwolf Books, Leya from Wandeca Reads, Julia's Book Cornerand Hope is the Word.

Now for a little bit of fun...

Your Christmas is Most Like: A Very Brady Christmas

For you, it's all about sharing times with family.

Day 17 - 2008 Blog Advent Tour

This month has gone so quickly! Only 8 more sleeps to go before the big day! Today on the Advent Blog Tour we are stopping by and visiting 3M from 1 More Chapter, Stine from The Washingtonium and Kim from Sophisticated Dorkiness

Following on from yesterday's post, here's a poem that I received in my email for those of who like to craft as well as to read!

Twas the night before Christmas, I'm glued to the tree.
I'm wondering what Santa brought just for me.
Could it be cardstock or chipboard or lace?
Or a Cricut, I said, with a smile on my face.
And that's when I heard him,

"Hi Santa, " I said
"You know....good little girls
should be in their beds."
"I know I should Santa,
and now I've got caught.
But I was just so excited
To see what you brought."

"Well, let's take a look
in this room where you work.
He shook his head quickly,
And left with a jerk.
I heard him exclaim
as he put it in gear.
"You've got enough crap,
I'll see you next year!"

Would you try this?

I have a number of blogs on my reader that are just there because I like to look at the pictures.

A few months ago, I started reading Cake Wrecks, because it amuses me no end, which led me to another blog called Cupcakes That Take the Cake. Normally I just look at the gorgeous creations, but I must confess that I am not tempted at all by the post for today.

Would you try a Chocolate Cupcake with Bacon Cream Cheese Filling?

Teaser Tuesday

I haven't done a Teaser Tuesday post for a couple of weeks. No idea why!

I have two teasers to share with you this week, one from each of the books I am currently reading!

The first teaser is from It by Stephen King. This is my first by King, who writes in a genre that it is fair to say is waaay outside my comfort zone, but it is good to challenge yourself...right?

We went into Ben's Morlock holes, into the sewers, but after awhile they weren't sewers anymore. They were...were...what?

The second teaser is from Under a Blood Red Sky by Kate Furnivall. I loved her first book, The Russian Concubine, when I read it last year. Unfortunately it is one of the books that I have the review started and sitting in draft for me to finish one day (not really going to happen!).

Sofia beckoned to Anna and led the way to the ditch on the edge of the forest, dug out as a latrine for the hundreds of workers. Behind it lay a boulder that was still half buried in the snow.
Give how much I have already read of the book, I have to say that that teaser has teased me, even if it isn't a very exciting tease for anyone else! LOL!

Day 16 - 2008 Advent Blog Tour

Today on the Blog Advent Tour we are stopping by at the blogs of Strumpet from Strumpet's Life, Chris from Stuff as Dreams are Made on and Tammy from Omah's Helping Hand.

Personally, I am rapidly coming to the realisation that unlike last year, I am not going to be able to make all my Christmas cards this year!

I have made some. There are two designs - one made out of the leftovers of the other. I have decided that I am a bit of a magpie really because I love the sparkles!

The only problem is that I only bought a couple of sheets of the red because I hadn't really worked through my design, so then I tried it in green and liked it in both. I am going to try making it in purple as well. The little silver strip is folded so that it becomes like a stand for the card as it is opened up. The silver embossing is done with holographic silver embossing powder so that it really sparkles as it moves around.

The second design I have was one that originally made in the blue because I needed to send it to a secret identity card swap, and there needed to be a clue as to my identity. Because my userid on a lot of forums is 'diamondlil' or some variation of that name, the sparkles will hopefully be a bit of a clue! In this case, the embossing is done with Opalescent embossing powder so that as you move it around in the light you can see all different shades of blue, green and red.

So out of each 12x12 Bazill card I get 4 cards, which I think is pretty good!

Still growing!

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I bought some fruit and vegies to grow. It took me a couple of weeks to repot them, but when I did I decided to put them up on my back deck. I wasn't convinced that it was really the best place for them but I wanted them to be right there so that I would see them every day and not forget to water them. I have to say that so far most of them seem to be thriving. The herbs are probably the ones that aren't doing so well, but I might move them so that they are closer to the light!

In the background to the first photo you can see what my plants generally end up looking like! The main reason for posting these today is in celebration of the fact that they aren't dead yet! Yay!

I have managed to do a few things this weekend actually. I have just finished emptying the memory card for my camera (because it was full). On the card there were pictures from our holiday 2 years ago!

The other thing that my friend and I did is put together the exercise bike that I bought as a birthday present to myself not last year, but the year before. Better late than never right? The plan is to do 1o minutes each morning while the news, sport and weather headlines are on and then build up from there. Of course, that was the plan when I bought it too, but that didn't exactly happen did it!

My son isn't very good at posing for pictures. Pulling faces are not that unusual, but the one on this photo is right up there with some of the worst faces I have seen for a while!

My Christmas shopping is pretty much done as well, so all in all a pretty productive weekend. Let's just not think about the fact that I didn't get to finish cleaning the kitchen, and I am still doing washing etc etc.

Day 14 - 2008 Advent Blog Tour

Today's stops on the Advent Tour are with Emily from Dreaming on the Job, Stephanie's Confessions of a Book-a-holic and with Cindy from Nocturnal Wonderings.

A couple of days ago I talked about the Melbourne tradition of visiting the Myer windows in the city. I haven't always lived here though. From the time I was 10 until my mid twenties, and then another couple of years later on, I lived in Adelaide. One of the major Christmas traditions in Adelaide is The Christmas Pageant.

The pageant was started in 1933, at the heart of the Depression, by the owner of the John Martins department store, and has bought joy to millions of South Australians over the years since. The pageant is held in early November each year, and heralds the commencement of the festive season because the last float is always Santa, making his way to the Magic Cave which is where all the kids can go and visit him. Every year a couple of hundred thousand people line the route, sitting behind the blue line and watch in delight as a variety of floats and characters pass by. I woke up this morning and found that the pageant was showing on TV, so it bought back lots of memories!

Kerrie from Mysteries in Paradise posted some photos of the pageant a while ago, and here is a video of some of the highlights.

2009 Blog Impovement Project

You already know that I am a sucker for reading challenges right? Well, I have signed up for another challenge, but this time it is more of a blogging project than a reading challenge. I think that Kim from Sophisticated Dorkiness has had a great idea, and I can't wait to see what she comes up with throughout the year.

The 2009 Blog Improvement Project is a year-long challenge that will consist of twice-monthly activities to improve your blog. Every first and third Monday of the month I’ll post an activity here at Sophisticated Dorkiness that will related in some way to making your blog better. Each participant should spend the next two weeks focusing on that aspect of their blog. Possible topics include goals setting, writing better content, building community with readers, getting more readers, and blog layout and design.

If you choose to participate in this project, there is no obligation to participate in every challenge, and you can customize each challenge so it makes sense for your particular blog and goals. Think of the design as similar to Weekly Geeks — participate when it makes sense for you. This is a group effort, because getting better is always easier when you have a support system, but the ultimate commitment remains with you — how do you want your blog to be better by the time we get to December 31, 2009?

A word of note — I am not a blogging expert. I’m just a beginning book blogger myself. I read a lot of blogs about blogging and am interested in social media, but I am by no means any better at blogging than anyone else. One of the reasons I am hosting this project is because I want to spend time improving this blog. I believe in support systems, and think this will be a fun way to get better together.

Computer hacker Lisbeth (code-name "was") loses control of her own affairs. The notoriously delinquent 24-year-old surveillance agent could not be reached for comment.
If you were to ask me what types of books are the hardest to write reviews about, normally I would say it was those books that were just mediocre in that they didn't inspire great enjoyment, but they also were not so terrible that you were tempted to wallbang them. Despite the fact that this book is definitely NOT one of those mediocre books I find myself struggling to decide where to start. The main reason for this is that there is just so much going on in this book.

There are in effect three major strands within this novel. The first is the story of Mikael Blomkvist. He is a investigative journalist and publisher who, as the book opens, finds himself on the wrong side of the law, found guilty of libel against wealth financier Hans-Erik Wennerstrom. Not content with winning his case, Wennerstrom seems determined to destroy the magazine that Blomkvist runs with his best friend and on/off lover Erika Berger. Mikael decides that his best course of action is to make himself scarce to give the magazine the best chance of survival.

Enter wealthy industrialist Henrik Vanger. After conducting his own investigation into Blomkvist, Vanger offers him an unusual opportunity. He wants Mikael to move to the country and live on the island where many of the Vanger family make their homes, and write a family history. The more important task for Mikael is to investigate the disappearance of Vanger's niece Harriet some 40 years prior. This investigation has run into dead ends almost from the beginning and yet on his birthday he receives a gift that can only be from the killer, if there was a killer, seemingly to torment him until the end of his life.

As Mikael investigates it becomes clear that there are many secrets in this powerful family - feuds between family members, fanatical Nazism, abuse, and many other unpleasant secrets. Even Mikael cannot believe what he finds out!

The third major character is Lisbeth, the girl with the dragon tattoo. Lisbeth is a ward of the state due to the fact that she is perceived to be incapable of managing her own affairs. In fact, she has socialisation issues, but is a brilliant hacker who freelances to perform background checks and the like.

As Lisbeth and Mikael come together, events take turns that are difficult to imagine, and in the hands of a lesser writer could become over the top and unbelievable. Luckily for us, Larsson mostly avoids the potential pitfalls in such a dramatic story! That doesn't mean to say that this is a perfect book because it isn't by any means! As you read through the latter pages of the book, there appears to be at least one, if not two, possible natural endings but instead the book carries on for a further 50-100 pages, almost as though the author realised there were too many loose ends to be carried onto into the next book.

Lisbeth is unique. She is someone who skirts on the edges of society and of the law. She is edgy and difficult to those around her with lots of issues that she needs to deal with. Most of the major characters are well defined and there are very few two dimensional characters throughout the book.

Orginally written in Swedish, there are some issues with editing and translation. At one point for example he is talking about a road name where he says it was obviously enough called Stalagatan (or something like that - I've returned the book now so can't check). As someone whose only exposure to Swedish is the product names at Ikea, it was nothing obvious to me, I can tell you!

I noticed on Larsson's website that there is currently a movie being made of this book. For a first book this is an assured, complex, edge of the seat thriller that has so many different themes. Larsson died after handing in the first three books in this series, so his planned series will never be completed. However, I can't wait to read the next books in the series and to enjoy the ride that he was taking me as a reader on for as long as I can!

This book was the winner of the Boeke Prize and Glass Key for the best Nordic crime novel of 2005, and I am therefore choosing this to be one of the books that I have read for the Book Awards Challenge.

In my opinion, these awards are well deserved. I highly recommend this book.

Day 12 - 2008 Advent Blog Tour

Christmas at Westminster, 1140

Christmas revelries at Westminster were lavish that year–deliberately so, as if rich fare and dramatic spectacle could somehow validate Stephen’s contested kingship, as if roast goose and spiced red wine and baker’s dozen of minstrels could make people forget the burning of Worcester, the sacking of Nottingham, the newly dug graves, and the uncertain tomorrows that lay ahead. The great hall of William Rufus had been adorned with so much greenery that it resembled the forest in which Rufus had met his death, decorated with evergreen boughs and holly and beribboned sprigs of mistletoe. The meal had been so bountiful that the leftover goose and venison and bread and eel scraped from the trenchers would feed Christ’s poor for days to come. The entertainment was equally extravagant: a woman rope dancer, a daredevil who juggled daggers, a Nativity play that offered not only the requisite shepherds and Magi but even a few sheep as props. Then the last of the trestle tables were cleared away and the dancing began, the irresistible, exuberant music of everyone’s favorite, the carol.

Thanks to Sherry for reminding me of this passage from one of my favourite authors!

Day 11 - 2008 Blog Advent Tour

One of the Christmas traditions in Melbourne is the Myer store windows. Each year Melburnians are treated to a beautiful display based on either famous stories, or different aspects of Christmas.

The display contents and storylines are top secret until the windows are put on display each year, but I have been able to find some links to some of the older displays.

Here is a link to the 2001 Christmas windows which had a Wind in the Willows theme. The windows themselves are animated so lots of movement and music, but hopefully you will get a fair idea of them from the link!

Today on the Blog Advent Tour we visit Chris from Book-a-rama, Bookwormom and Mister Teacher from Learn Me Good

Day 9 - 2008 Advent Blog Tour

Today on the 2008 Advent Blog Tour we are visiting with Raidergirl3 from An Adventure in Reading and Sherrie from Just Books. I hope you enjoy today's contribution, and that you are enjoying the whole tour so far!

You may have noticed that each day I have been trying to give you a little morsel of Christmas cheer when I post the tour details! Today I give you Carolyn Jean from The Trillionth Page's Holiday Gift Exchange cartoons. The idea is that each day one romance character gives a gift to other romance characters. Yes, they are romance based, but I think that people can still appreciate the sentiment, and there are some characters who are more mainstream than others.

Here are a couple from this year's batch (so far):

and one from last year:

Be sure to check the rest of the cartoons out at Carolyn Jean's blog.

Day 7 - 2008 Advent Blog Tour

Did you know Santa is a blogger? I had no idea at all! Thanks to Swimmom I do now, and it is a hoot! Of course, my respect at Santa's time management skills has grown even more - in store appearances, making toys, wrapping the gifts, packing the sleigh, reading all those letters from children around the world and blogging as well! What a guy!

Another fun link is this very cute Christmas themed jigsaw puzzle e-card.

Today on the Advent Blog Tour we are visiting Becky from Becky's Book Reviews and Melissa from Book Nut. Enjoy!

By the way, Ladytink was unable to post on her day due to computer issues, but her post is up now! Please be sure to check it out.

Kelley Armstrong giveaway

I have previously named Kelley Armstrong as one of my favourite authors! I really enjoy her books, and now there is a chance for us to win one of two copies of her books (one signed and one unsigned). In order to win you just need to leave a comment about your favourite Armstrong book over at Amberkatze's Book Blog!

Day 6 - 2008 Advent Blog Tour

I am thinking about putting up the Christmas tree and outdoor lights this weekend. What I can tell you is that the outdoor lights will not look like the ones in the video above!

Today on the blog tour we are visiting with Andrew from The View from Arizona, Marny the Bookworm and Kerri from Latte' Buddies.

Enjoy!

New challenges!

I really am trying hard to resist signing up for too many challenges before 2009 starts, but some times you see challenges that you just have to join in on!

What that really means is that, yes, I have signed up for more challenges!

The first of them is The Art History Reading Challenge. The challenge is to read 6 books about art during 2009. I already have Passion of Artemesia by Susan Vreeland and Tulip Fever by Debbie Moggach on my TBR list, as well as a couple of others, so that should be doable.

The second is the War Through the Generations WWII Challenge. I love reading books set around WWI and WWII, so this one is right up my alley! You need to read at least 5 books set in or around WWII during 2009. I do have a couple in mind already. At this point I think I will probably sign up for 5 books, but I do hope to exceed that amount.

Day 5 - 2008 Advent Blog Tour

You Are a Tree

You love every part of the holidays, down to the candy canes and stockings. And you're goofy enough to put a Christmas tree ornament on your tree!

For today's tour stops we are visiting with Vickie from Scrapbooking and Tidbits and Rob from The Snig's Foot. Looking forward to seeing their posts!

This is awesome!

This is a film that was made for 4th Estate Publishers' 25th Anniversary.

This Is Where We Live from 4th Estate on Vimeo.

Day 4 - 2008 Advent Blog Tour

I haven't quite managed to figure out what time of day is the best time to put up the post each day.

The problem is the different time zones around the world. As I type this, it is currently approx 1.30pm on 4 December here in eastern Australia. In Los Angeles it is only 6.30pm in LA on 3 December, and in London it is 2.30am on 4 December! So if I post now, my day is over half way done, it is just starting in the UK and there is still a whole lot of Wednesday left in the US! I think I will probably schedule to the post so it is published at 4pm my time, so hopefully that is not too confusing for everyone.

That is a very complicated way of saying, put your tour post up whenever you are ready. I will be announcing the stops earlier than a lot of people will be ready, but I will go back and amend the post to add in the exact links once the posts are up.

Today the tour is visiting Ladytink from Ladytink's Neverland and Kim from Page After Page.

Looking forward to another great day on this year's tour.

Day 3 - 2008 Advent Blog Tour

It's day 3 of the 2008 Advent Blog Tour! Today we visit Booklogged from A Reader's Journal and Lisa from Book Lists Life.

Seems we are not the only people who are sharing an Advent Calendar this year *grin*.

Over at The Big Picture, every day from Christmas they are sharing a new incredible image from the Hubble Space Telescope. Click here to see the images that have already been revealed, and then keep checking back for new images each day!

P.S. I am SO sorry! The other stop on our tour today is at Alison's blog at Homeschooler's Guide to the Galaxy! Apparently I can't read my own list! Normally I only have that issue with my handwriting!

Fantastic Giveaways from Samhain Publishing

There are giveaways all over the place at the moment, but I have to say that the chance to win one of two Kindles and lots of other prizes as well is pretty awesome.

In order to find out all the detail visit Angela at Nice Mommy, Evil Editor.

I am not sure if the Kindle even works in Australia, but amongst the other prizes being given away over the next couple of weeks there are Gift Certificates, books, prize packs etc. Certainly worth taking a look for sure!

Sad news indeed

I was shocked this morning to find out that Dewey from Hidden Side of a Leaf has passed away.

Dewey bought so much to the book blogging community through her various projects like the Read-a-thon and Weekly Geeks, but more than anything she bought an abundance of energy, vigour and enthusiasm. I hope that as a community we are able to continue those projects as a mark of respect for Dewey.

As much as I feel a sense of loss for someone who I have never met, my thoughts are with her family and friends who will be feeling her loss her even more.

She will indeed by sadly missed.

RIP Dewey

Day 2 - 2008 Advent Blog Tour

What a great start to the tour we had yesterday with three fantastic posts!

Today we are off to visit Louise from Lou's Pages and Penelope from Life's Sweet Passions.

And...we're...off!

Or very nearly ready to take off on our first day of the 2008 Advent Blog Tour! I am so excited, and I can't wait to see what you all have for us as treats!

First things first, a couple of pieces of business! The first is to draw the prize winner for this year's tour -

Joanna from Lost in A Good Story

Joanne if you could please contact me (my email is in my profile) we will work out which store or what book you would like!

Second thing second - If as the tour progresses you feel inspired to want to contribute something but you are not already on the list, then please leave a comment and join in on the fun. We can always slot you in on the list!

So, on with the tour!

The stops for December 1 are at Alabama Bookworm, at Joanna's blog, Lost in a Good Story and at You Can Never Have Too Many Books with Susan (great blog title too Susan!).

Everyone has already got their posts up, and I already feel more Christmassy than I had been!

Word Verification is back on

Back at the beginning of October, I posted about a movement that Bethany from B&B Ex Libris was starting to Kill Word Verification. Because I do appreciate the frustration that there can be at having to type in these random letters that are sometimes very difficult to read, I decided to be brave and turn my word verification off to.

Unfortunately, over the last couple of weeks I have been getting lots and lots of spam, all in Japanese or Chinese, so completely wasted on me. It hasn't just been one comment here or there either. Tonight I had 40 spam comments left, and I have to say it took me a darned sight longer to clean up than it did for the tosser who was posting them to do so!!

So, what I am trying to say is that Word Verification is back on! I hope that it doesn't stop people from leaving real comments. Sorry Bethany, as much as I would love to not ever have to type in random letters again for word verification, it is going to have to stay on my blog for the time being!

2008 Blog Advent Tour

*******************STICKY POST*******************

In what feels a bit like is coming a Christmas tradition given that this is the third year running that we are doing this, Kailana from The Written World and I thought it would be fun if we had ran the virtual advent calendar again this year. After all, why should the kids get all the fun of opening a box on the advent calendar and finding a little treat in there?

Each day anyone who wants to participate could take turns sharing a little treat with our friends here in blogland. For example it could be something about a holiday tradition, or a recipe, or a picture of a hot guy dressed as Santa, or a favourite Christmas memory, movie, book, song...anything you like. Even if you don't celebrate Christmas we would like to hear about what your family does during the holiday season, whether it be celebrating Hanukkah or Kwanzaa or anything!

We will create a list of links so that as people express interest we will add them to the list, and then we will post a link directing visitors to the appropriate blog. To give people a chance to get organised, we will start on Monday 1 December. If there are more people than there are days that's fine too.....the more the merrier! It just means that there will be more than one blog to visit on those days.

In addition to getting to see lots of fun things and maybe finding new blogs there is also a chance to win either a gift card up to the equivalent of $20US, or the book of your choice, if your internet retailer of choice doesn't do gift cards. We will draw the name of the winner out of the list of people who have signed up prior to the blog tour starting, so get in and sign up for your day soon!

Signing up is easy! Just leave a comment either on this post, or the similar one at Kailana's blog! If you want to post on a specific date then please mention that date in your comment as well, otherwise we will allocate a date for you.

If you want to see what other people have done during the last couple of years, then this link will lead you to all the posts over the last couple of years.

A very special thanks to Alex from Le Canape for the lovely button! When I asked her to create a button for this year's tour, I didn't really give her much to go on other than the ones from the previous two years. She came back with this one, and the reason she gave for the design was "to do something like a small part of an envelope and a stamp, since this must be the time of the year when people send more letters to each others." Perfect! Thanks Alex!
