Dessert First

This week's Booking Through Thursday questions:

1. Do you cheat and peek ahead at the end of your books? Or do you resolutely read in sequence, as the author intended?

2. And, if you don’t peek, do you ever feel tempted?

I ALWAYS peak ahead to the end of my books....pretty much without fail.

Usually I read the first few pages, and then read the last page or so, and then I read the book. I have no idea why I feel compelled to do this, but I just can't help myself!

There have only been two occasions when I have regretted reading the end, and that was because the twists were so dramatic in the last couple of pages that it changed the reading experience for me. Those two books were My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult and Red Leaves by Thomas Cook.

  1. I do peek very occasionally, usually when I am about two thirds of the way through.

  2. I almost never peak at the ending because part of the fun of reading, for me, is seeing how the story will end. That’s not to say I’m not tempted to peak sometimes—and sometimes I do peak ahead a few pages at a time—but I resist reading the ending outright because I like being surprised. The exception to this is when I’m not sure if I’m interested in reading a book and I’m trying to decide, or if I am reading the book and it’s not interesting me. Then I’ll get skip ahead to see how it all ends.

  3. You always peak?!

I never peak. I'm too afraid of ruining the story. Plus, I like to go through a book and try to think ahead to the ending ("If I were the author, where would I take this?").

  4. I NEVER peek! It totally ruins the surprise for me! I can't believe how many people actually DO look at the end first!

  5. I'm having a good time looking at all of the people who do peek! I'm shocked, shocked!!!

  6. Hey Marg,

I have Holly and Izzy spoil for me, I didn't want to know the goods before I read them before, but now? Oh no, I'm all about the spoilers, bring them on! =)

  7. I'll sometimes peek to see if there's anything besides the story at the end of the book that will add to the reading experience. Some books, like George R.R. Martin's Fire & Ice series, have complex cast of charcters and others, like Terry Pratchett's Wee Free Men books, have translations of some of the words used. But I never ever look to see what the end of the story is going to be.

  8. I am not a peeker and find it interesting to read the responses of those who do dare to peek. I think if I was a peeker, I'd be afraid the book police would arrest me for cheating. Haha

  9. I usually peak when I'm having a tough time with the story. I usually go about three pages from the end and read. If I'm interested in the ending then I continue the book, if not, it goes to the DNF. Epilogues have killed more books for me...

  10. I peek about 50% of the time. Especially when the story bogs down and I get bored. If I'm reading chick lit or women's fiction I read the first chapter then the last chapter. If I hate the end I'm not wasting my time with the rest of it. I used to always peek but I have reformed somewhat :)
