How much is too much?

I really want to start reading Elizabeth Chadwick's backlist. As you may know if you read my blog regularly I don't really like reading series out of order so I thought I would start at the beginning, which is, as far as I can tell, The Wild Hunt.

Whilst my library has got the two books that follow this one, it doesn't have The Wild Hunt, so I thought I would have a look on Ebay to see if it is available. Which it is....if you are happy to pay $125 for it, and about $20 postage to get it from the UK. That is WAAYYY out of my price range for a book!

So my quandary now is whether I just start reading the series at book number 2...or skip this series altogether and move onto Children of Destiny.

How much is too much for you to pay for a book? What's the most that you have paid for a book?

  1. Well, it's hard to know where to draw the line, but I think $125 + $20 is way past MY line!

The most I've paid was full HC price for the latest Harry Potter, about $30. I would have been able to get it for much less if I'd been able to wait a few weeks and get it used from ebay, but I needed to read it the minute it came out.

For romance books, I think the most I've paid might have been about $15 for an old Mary Balogh regency.

  2. Marg,

Go to http://used.addall.com and look. I found The Wild Hunt at Alibris for $7.45 US as well as other places. Surely ONE of them ships to Australia? Hope that helps!

  3. That's way out of my price range! I've paid around $25+ shipping for used hardcover copies of old favorites. Like you, I mostly rely on the library and am always really upset when they don't have what I want.

Elizabeth Chadwick is great! Though I haven't read this series.

  4. It's the postage that then kills, but I will keep that site in mind! Thanks.

  5. Can you get it through inter-library loan from your library? They'll search other libraries and bring it in. I don't think it costs anything... it doesn't in my library system. Just a thought.

  6. I have had a look - as far as I can tell there are only half a dozen libraries in the country who have this book!

  7. Well, if it was an Anne Stuart book

Okay, enough with the throwing things!!

Anyways, I participated in the AAR auctions for Hurricane Katrina but I have blocked just how much I really did spend so obviously it was over what I would normally cough up for a book.

Since I'm cheap by nature this book would have to be printed on gold leaf pages for that price ;)

  8. I've never actually paid for a book online. I like to feel mine and thumb through pages before buying. Having said that, I'm planning to pre-order some books through Rendezvous (why are all the good stores always in Melbourne?) and have them post the order to me. Anything over $15 for paperbacks is getting iffy for me. Over $30 for a hardbound book is pretty much my limit.

Also, if you ever go to Coolangatta, there's an awesome secondhand store along the main road and they have stacks of romance novels. I bought some old favourites for $6 apiece, including one from a less well-known author whose first book I really never expected to find.

  9. If you are ever in Melbourne, you should go to Rendezvous - really friendly girls in there!

I actually don't thumb through books too often anyway! I tend to already know what I am going to get when I go to the bookstore or library so it is just straight in and straight out for me!

  10. The most I have ever paid would be $50. $125 plus postage is way too much especially for a book you may not even end up liking.
Hope you manage to find it somewhere else.
